Records you may be asked for

A consultation usually starts with your medical and dental history and an examination. Practices that plan digitally may also take a 3D scan of the jaw, a digital scan of the teeth and photographs. These records may be taken at the first appointment or at a second planning visit. Ask which records are proposed and whether each is charged separately.

If you have recent X-rays or scans from your own dentist, bring them or ask for them to be sent. They may reduce what needs to be repeated.

The plan you should leave with

After the consultation, ask for a written plan. A clear one sets out:

  • Each stage of treatment, in order, with an approximate timeline.
  • Who will carry out each stage.
  • Each item and its fee, including scans, grafting, implants, temporary teeth and the final crown or bridge.
  • The procedure codes for your medical aid.
  • The maintenance needed afterwards.

Questions worth asking in Rosebank

Ask whether a surgical guide is proposed, and why; whether the crown or bridge is made in-house or by an outside laboratory; and whether the practice offers appointments that suit Gautrain travel if you plan to use the train for the short visits. Ask, too, what non-implant options the practitioner considered.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get the plan at the first appointment?

Sometimes, but often the written plan follows once the scans have been reviewed. Ask how the practice handles this.

Can I bring scans from my own dentist?

Yes. Recent records may avoid repeating some imaging. Ask the practice whether they can use them.

Do you recommend a Rosebank practice for consultations?

No. We do not recommend, rank or book practitioners.

The next step is an assessment by a dentist

Only a dentist who examines you, with X-rays or a scan, can say whether an implant is suitable and what it would involve. Start with your own dentist. If you do not have one, read what an implant assessment covers and what to take with you.
